Best Time to Hunt Moose: Season, Rut and Time of Day

The best time to hunt moose is the fall rut, roughly early September through early October in most moose country, with the first and last hours of daylight being the most productive part of each day. Bulls move more, respond to calls and travel toward breeding areas during the rut, so timing your hunt around it matters more than any single piece of gear.
Below we break down the best season, the best weeks, the best time of day and how weather changes moose movement, plus what to wear on cold fall mornings. Browse matching designs in our moose hunting shirts and hoodies collection.
Best time to hunt moose: the fall rut
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game explains that "at some point in late August or early September, moose begin changing their diet to include woody browse of willow, aspen, poplar and birch. Migratory moose also begin moving to fall ranges for the rut, or breeding season" (ADF&G: More on Moose & Moose Hunting).
That movement is the reason most general moose seasons open in late August or September. Bulls that were hard to find in summer start covering ground, grunting and answering calls. The trade-off: animals you scouted in July may not be in the same place by opening day.
| Period | What moose are doing | Hunting notes |
|---|---|---|
| Late August | Summer feeding, bulls in velvet or just stripping | Bulls still near summer range; good for early openers where legal. |
| Early to mid September | Pre-rut, bulls moving toward rutting areas | Calling starts to work; older bulls often move first. |
| Mid September to early October | Peak rut | Most movement and response to calls; bulls can be less cautious. |
| Mid October onward | Post-rut, bulls feeding and recovering | Calling slows; focus on feeding areas. Many seasons are closed. |

Which weeks of the season are best?
ADF&G notes that if you locate legal bulls in summer, you should "hunt there on opening day—usually September 1" in many Alaska areas, before they move toward rutting areas. In its Fortymile example, "large mature bulls move first, followed by younger bulls as September progresses."
In practice that gives two good windows:
- Opening days: bulls may still be on the summer range you scouted.
- The heart of the rut: bulls are traveling and calling, which makes them easier to locate.
Exact dates depend on your state, province or unit. Moose tags are often limited-draw, so always check your hunting regulations for season dates and legal bull rules before you plan.
Best time of day to hunt moose
Most moose hunters plan around the first and last light of the day. Moose tend to bed during the warmer middle of the day and feed and move more in the cooler, dim hours. Glassing open meadows, willow flats and pond edges at dawn and dusk gives you the best chance to spot them.
Midday is not wasted time, though. During the rut, bulls can move at any hour, and a quiet midday calling set near a wallow or willow bottom can still produce. Use the middle of the day to move to new glassing spots or check sign.

How weather affects moose movement
Moose are built for cold. ADF&G points out that moose "drink large quantities of water during warm weather." Warm afternoons push them into shade and water, while a cold front or a frosty morning usually gets them on their feet.
- Cold, clear mornings: often the best movement of the week.
- Warm spells: focus on dawn, dusk and water.
- Wind: strong wind makes calling harder to hear and moose more nervous. Hunt sheltered drainages.
- Light rain: moose often keep moving, and quiet ground helps still-hunting.
Plan the pack-out before you pick the day
The best time to hunt is also the time you can handle the meat. ADF&G warns that "you will have about 400 to 700 lbs of meat and up to 65 lbs of antlers to transport," and quotes the old advice to "never kill a moose more than a mile from a vehicle of some sort." Warm early-season days make fast meat care even more important, so line up help, game bags and transport before you hunt.
What to wear on cold fall moose hunts
Early-season moose mornings can start near freezing and warm up fast, so layers beat one heavy coat. A comfortable hoodie works well as a mid layer around camp, at the truck or under a shell on long glassing sessions.
Our moose hunting hoodies use polyester with a soft brushed inner fleece, ribbed cuffs and hem, and a lined hood, with a vivid all-over print. Try the forest camouflage moose hunting hoodie, the moose skull orange camo design or the orange camo forest moose design with your name on the sleeve. Each design also comes as a T-shirt, long sleeve shirt, zip-up hoodie or sweatshirt, from $29.99.

Note: these are casual all-over printed apparel, not insulated hunting outerwear, scent-control or safety gear. Where hunter orange is required, wear compliant blaze orange; an orange camo print does not replace it.
