Can Bears See Color? What Research Says for Hunters

Can bears see color? Yes. Studies with black bears and polar bears show that bears can tell colors apart, and bear researchers describe their close-up vision as sharp. What bears rely on even more is smell and hearing, so color is only one part of staying hidden from a bear.

Below we look at what the research actually says, how bear vision compares with their nose and ears, what that means for clothing, and the bear hunting shirts in our bear hunting collection.

What does research say about whether bears can see color?

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game summarized the key studies: "Studies indicate that bears do see in color. Tests with black bears and polar bears indicate that bears can see color" (Alaska Fish & Wildlife News).

In the black bear test, one bear was trained to find food in a blue container and another in a green one. The bears could then pick the right color from similar shades such as blue-gray or blue-green, which a color-blind animal could not do reliably. A separate test with polar bears and colored ice blocks reached the same conclusion.

How well can bears see compared with smell and hearing?

The North American Bear Center sums it up: bears "see in color and have sharp vision close-up. Their distance vision (over two hundred yards) has not been tested." It also notes their hearing is "over twice the sensitivity of human hearing" and their nasal mucosa area is "about 100 times larger than in humans" (bear.org).

Sense What sources say Practical takeaway
Vision Sees color, sharp close-up; long-range vision not tested Movement and contrast up close can give you away
Hearing More than twice as sensitive as human hearing Quiet fabrics and slow movement help
Smell Extremely good; limits untested Wind direction matters more than any shirt

What color do bears see best?

The studies above tested blue and green, and the bears performed well with both. The research does not rank one color as "best" for bears, so be careful with any claim that says a bear cannot see a specific color. If your state requires blaze orange for bear season, follow the rule from your state wildlife agency; no camo shirt replaces required safety orange.

Does camo work against bears?

Because bears see color and detail up close, camo patterns help break up a human outline, especially when you stay still. But since smell and hearing are so strong, camo is a helper, not a solution: play the wind, stay quiet and limit movement.
