Do UV Fishing Shirts Work? What UPF Means for Anglers

Yes, UV fishing shirts work — a tightly knit long-sleeve fishing shirt blocks far more sun than bare skin or sunscreen that has washed off by mid-morning. The fabric does not wear off, sweat off or need reapplying. What it cannot do is cover your face, neck and hands, so the best setup on the water is a UV fishing shirt plus a face shield and sunscreen on whatever skin is still exposed.
Below we explain what UPF actually means on a fishing shirt, what makes one fabric protect better than another, and how to choose the right cut for a full day on the boat. You can also browse our best selling fishing shirts to see the styles anglers order most.

What does UPF mean on fishing shirts?
UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. It rates how much UV radiation — both UVB and UVA — a fabric lets through to your skin. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, a UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun's rays and lets about 2 percent (1/50th) through. SPF, by contrast, is the rating for sunscreen.
For comparison, the same source notes that a white T-shirt gives only moderate protection — a UPF of about 7 — and drops to about UPF 3 when wet. That gap is why anglers moved from cotton tees to dedicated fishing shirts.
Do UV fishing shirts actually work?
They do, for three practical reasons anglers notice quickly:
- Constant coverage. Sunscreen needs reapplying every couple of hours and after getting wet. A long sleeve shirt covers your arms all day without a bottle.
- Reflected sun. On the water you get UV from above and bounced off the surface. Covering arms, back and shoulders takes care of the largest skin area at once.
- Cooler than you expect. Lightweight polyester wicks sweat and dries fast, so many anglers feel cooler in a light long sleeve than in a T-shirt under direct sun.
The limit is coverage: a shirt only protects what it covers. That is why many anglers add a hood or a face shield for the neck and face.

What makes a good UV fishing shirt?
Fabric
Synthetic performance fabrics such as polyester hold their weave better than cotton, dry quickly and do not get heavy when wet. Every Shopwada fishing shirt in our UPF styles is made from 100% polyester that is lightweight, breathable, quick-dry and moisture-wicking.
Color and print
Darker and more saturated colors generally absorb more UV than pale ones. All-over sublimation printing dyes the design into the fabric, so the print does not crack, peel or fade the way a heavy screen-printed patch can.
Cut and coverage
For a full day on the boat, long sleeves beat short sleeves. A hooded long sleeve adds neck and head coverage, and a face shield (neck gaiter) covers the gap between collar and cap.
Which style should you pick: tee, long sleeve or hooded?
Most of our fishing designs come in several cuts so you can match the shirt to the trip:
| Style | Best for | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| T-Shirt UPF | Short trips, early mornings, casual wear | Torso and upper arms |
| Long Sleeve UPF | Full days on open water, tournaments | Torso and full arms |
| Hooded Long Sleeve UPF | Midday sun, flats and offshore | Adds neck and head |
| Long Sleeve UPF + Face Shield | Maximum coverage | Adds face and neck |
| Kids Long Sleeve UPF | Young anglers | Torso and full arms |

Do I still need sunscreen under a UPF shirt?
Under the shirt, usually not — that is the point of covered skin. You still need sunscreen on your face, ears, neck, the backs of your hands and anywhere the shirt does not reach. One honest note: our product pages describe these styles as sun-protective fabric, but we do not publish a lab-tested UPF number for each design. If you burn easily or have a medical reason to limit sun exposure, follow your doctor's advice and combine clothing with sunscreen, a hat and shade.
Do UV shirts still protect when wet?
Yes, but less than when dry. The Skin Cancer Foundation notes that clothing that gets stretched or wet loses some of its protective ability, regardless of UPF. Cotton is the worst offender because it stretches and turns semi-sheer. Fast-drying polyester recovers quickly, which is one reason performance fishing shirts are made from it. If your shirt gets soaked, it is worth checking that exposed skin still has sunscreen.
How to care for a UV fishing shirt
To keep the fabric and print in good shape, our care instructions are simple: machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, do not bleach, and hang dry. Skip fabric softener, which can coat performance fibers and reduce wicking.

Personalized fishing shirts for you and your crew
Many of our designs can be personalized with a name or team name at no extra charge — handy for tournament crews or a gift for the angler in the family. Patriotic designs like the US fishing hook American flag shirt and species designs like the largemouth bass shirt are among the most popular. Each shirt is printed to order in 2–3 business days, then ships in 3–7 business days within the US; shipping is free on orders of $50 or more.

FAQ
Are UPF shirts worth it?
For anglers who spend hours in direct sun, yes. A long-sleeve UPF shirt covers the largest area of skin with no reapplying and dries fast after spray or sweat.
What is the best UV shirt for fishing?
Look for a lightweight, quick-dry polyester long sleeve. Add a hood or face shield if you fish midday or offshore.
Is UPF the same as SPF?
No. UPF rates fabric against both UVA and UVB; SPF rates sunscreen, mainly against UVB.
Can kids wear UV fishing shirts?
Yes. Our Kids Long Sleeve UPF style is the same sun shirt sized for young anglers.
