Golf has a reputation for strict dress codes, and if you are new to the game or playing a new course, it is easy to worry about showing up in the wrong thing. The good news: most golf dress codes follow the same basic logic, and once you know it, you can walk onto almost any course with confidence. This guide explains the golf dress code for men and women in plain English, from shirts and pants to shoes, hats and layers, and how rules change between public courses, private clubs and tournaments.

Why golf has a dress code at all

Golf dress codes come from the game's tradition, but they also have practical roots. Collared shirts and tailored pants look neat in a clubhouse, golf shoes protect greens, and a consistent standard keeps the atmosphere relaxed for everyone. Today, many public courses are more flexible than they used to be, while private clubs and tournaments still tend to follow the classic rules closely.

The safest approach is simple: dress to the classic standard unless you know the course is casual. If you are ever unsure, call the pro shop or check the course website before your tee time.

The golf dress code for men

Shirts

  • Collared shirts are the standard. A golf polo is the most common choice. Mock-neck golf shirts are accepted at many courses too.
  • Tuck it in. Many clubs expect shirts to be tucked in, especially at private courses and tournaments.
  • Avoid T-shirts, tank tops and jerseys from other sports unless you know the course allows them.

Performance polos are the easy answer. They meet the collar rule and stay comfortable in heat. Our golf shirts for men come in classic and bold designs, all with a proper collar.

Pants and shorts

  • Golf trousers, chinos or tailored slacks are always acceptable.
  • Tailored golf shorts are allowed at most courses. Very short shorts, cargo shorts and athletic shorts may not be.
  • Denim is banned at many courses, so leave the jeans in the car.

Belts

A belt is expected at more traditional clubs if your pants or shorts have belt loops.

The golf dress code for women

Tops

  • Collared polos, sleeveless polos with a collar and mock-neck tops are widely accepted.
  • Some traditional clubs expect sleeveless tops to have a collar.
  • Very low-cut tops, tube tops and casual T-shirts may not be allowed.

Sleeveless polos are a summer favorite. Our sleeveless golf shirts keep the collar that most dress codes ask for. For a classic look, browse our women's golf polos, which are shaped at the waist for a better fit through the swing.

Bottoms

  • Golf skorts, golf skirts, tailored shorts, capris and golf pants are all standard.
  • Very short hemlines may not meet the dress code at private clubs.
  • Leggings worn on their own are not permitted at some courses, though rules are relaxing.

Golf shoes and footwear

Most courses require golf shoes or soft-spike athletic shoes. Metal spikes are banned at nearly every course today. Some casual courses allow clean athletic sneakers, but running shoes with aggressive tread can damage greens. Never play in sandals or flip-flops.

Hats and accessories

  • Caps and visors are welcome on the course. Many golfers wear them backward or not at all in the clubhouse, where traditional clubs ask players to remove hats indoors.
  • Sunglasses, gloves and towels are fine everywhere.
  • Bucket hats are increasingly common for sun protection.

A personalized cap is a fun way to complete a team look. Our golfer hats can carry a custom name.

Cold-weather golf dress code

Winter golf brings its own rules of thumb:

  • Layer a quarter-zip, golf sweater or vest over your polo. Keeping a collar visible underneath looks tidy and satisfies stricter clubs.
  • Choose wind-resistant outer layers that do not restrict your swing.
  • Avoid hoodies at traditional clubs, though many public courses allow them now.

A golf sweater is one of the most practical gifts for winter golfers. See our golf sweaters, including seasonal and argyle-inspired designs.

Public courses vs private clubs vs tournaments

Public and municipal courses

Generally the most relaxed. Many allow clean T-shirts and athletic shorts, though a collared shirt is still the safe choice.

Private clubs and resorts

Expect the classic rules: collared shirts tucked in, tailored pants or shorts, no denim, golf shoes, and hats off indoors. Guests are expected to follow the same rules as members.

Tournaments and scrambles

Most events follow the host course's dress code. Many organizers hand out matching tournament polos, which solves the question for every player.

Dress code for juniors and new golfers

Junior golfers are usually held to the same basic standard as adults: a collared shirt, tailored shorts or pants and appropriate shoes. Many courses are welcoming to beginners and will not turn away a new golfer over a small detail, but showing up in the right outfit helps you feel like you belong from the first tee. If you are introducing a friend or a child to golf, lend them a polo or pick one up before the round so they are not self-conscious.

For new golfers, the most common mistakes are wearing jeans, athletic shorts, a T-shirt or running shoes. Fix those four and you will meet the dress code almost anywhere.

Dress codes for themed and team events

Many leagues and charity scrambles have themed days: Hawaiian shirt day, St. Patrick's Day, Fourth of July or holiday sweater scrambles. Organizers usually relax the rules for these events, but a collar is still a good idea. A Hawaiian-style golf polo with a collar gives you the theme without breaking the dress code.

For league play, matching team polos are the easiest way to look sharp and stay within the rules. Every player on the team gets a proper collar, a comfortable performance fabric and a shared look that stands out in photos.

Can you wear a colorful or printed polo to golf?

At most courses, yes. Dress codes focus on the collar, the type of bottoms and the shoes, not on color or pattern. Bold printed polos are common at scrambles, charity events and league nights, where teams often wear matching shirts. The exception is a club that asks for a specific color or a tournament with a uniform rule, so check the event sheet. Keep graphics clean: "offensive graphics" are banned at most courses.

What not to wear golfing

  • Basketball shorts, gym shorts or sweatpants
  • Collarless T-shirts or tank tops at traditional courses
  • Metal-spiked shoes, sandals or flip-flops
  • Clothing with offensive graphics or language

Dress code checklist before your tee time

  • Collared golf polo or mock-neck shirt
  • Golf trousers, tailored shorts, skort or skirt (no denim)
  • Belt if you have belt loops
  • Golf shoes or soft-spike shoes
  • Cap or visor for the course, off in the clubhouse
  • A layer you can add or remove

Getting the fit right

A dress-code-friendly shirt still has to let you swing. Check our size guide before ordering: a men's polo in M measures 40 inches at the chest and 29 inches long, and a women's sleeveless polo in M has a 39.8-inch bust and a 26.4-inch length. If you are between two sizes, go with the larger one.
