You throw a few games at the bar every weekend, you are getting better, and now somebody has asked if you want to join their dart league team. Great news: dart leagues are one of the friendliest, most social ways to compete in any sport. But if you have never played in one, the terms can be confusing. Steel-tip or soft-tip? 501 or cricket? What is an average, and what is a handicap? This guide explains how a dart league works, how to find one and what to bring on your first night.

What is a dart league?

A dart league is an organized competition in which teams play scheduled matches against each other over a season, usually one night a week at bars, pubs or social clubs. Results are tracked across the season, and the best teams often move on to playoffs or end-of-season tournaments. Leagues are run by local associations, bar owners or regional organizations, and each sets its own rules and formats.

Steel-tip vs soft-tip leagues

Steel-tip

Steel-tip leagues use traditional bristle dartboards and darts with metal points. Scores are kept by hand on a chalkboard or whiteboard, or with a scoring app. Steel-tip has a classic, pub-style feel.

Soft-tip

Soft-tip leagues use electronic boards with plastic-tipped darts. The board keeps score automatically and often records your stats. Soft-tip boards are common in American bars and arcades, and many leagues are organized around them.

Both are fun. Pick the one that matches the bars near you and the darts you already own.

How teams are organized

  • Team size: many leagues use teams of four to six players, with a few extra players on the roster as substitutes.
  • Captain: each team has a captain who handles the roster, lineups and communication with the league.
  • Home bar: teams usually represent a bar and play home matches there, alternating with away matches at opponents' bars.
  • Divisions: larger leagues split teams into divisions by skill so matches stay competitive.

The games you will play

A typical league night includes a mix of games, usually some combination of:

  • 01 games (301, 501): each player starts at 301 or 501 and subtracts scores, racing to exactly zero. Many steel-tip leagues require finishing on a double.
  • Cricket: players race to close 15 through 20 and the bull, scoring points on numbers their opponent has not closed. New to it? Read our guide on how to play cricket darts.
  • Singles, doubles and team games: a match night often includes individual games, partner games and a full-team game.

Averages, ratings and handicaps

Most leagues track each player's performance. In 01 games, a common stat is points per dart (or per round); in cricket, it is marks per round. These numbers are used to:

  • Place teams into fair divisions
  • Apply handicaps in some leagues, giving less experienced players a head start
  • Recognize top performers at the end of the season

Do not worry about your numbers when you start. Everyone improves with weekly play, and teammates will be happy to help.

What a typical match night looks like

  1. Arrive early to warm up on the board.
  2. Captains exchange lineups and agree on the order of games.
  3. Games are played one after another, with players taking turns at the board.
  4. Scores are recorded on a scoresheet or in the board's system.
  5. Captains sign off on the final result, and the team with the most game wins takes the match.

Matches can last a few hours, with plenty of time to socialize between games.

How to find a dart league

  • Ask your local bar. Bartenders usually know which leagues play there and which teams need players.
  • Search for your city's dart association. Many regions have an association that runs steel-tip leagues.
  • Check social media groups for local darts communities.
  • Form your own team with friends and contact a league operator before the season starts.

Most leagues have a sign-up fee and a weekly fee per player or team. Ask the operator for details.

What to bring to your first league night

  • Your own darts (or borrow house darts at first)
  • Spare flights and shafts, because they break at the worst moments
  • A dart case to keep everything together
  • Your team shirt if your team has one
  • A good attitude: league darts is as much about the people as the game

Team shirts: part of the league tradition

Matching jerseys are a big part of league culture. They help teammates find each other in a crowded bar, look great in photos and give your team an identity. Many dart shirts also feature a chest pocket for holding darts between throws.

Our dart league shirts and dart team jerseys can be personalized with your team name and player names. Need a name first? Our list of dart team names has plenty of ideas.

Ask each player to check our size guide before ordering. A men's polo in M is 40 inches at the chest, and a women's polo in M has a 42-inch bust. Choose the larger size if you are in between, so your throwing arm has room. Shirts are printed to order: 2–3 business days of processing plus 3–7 business days of US shipping. Orders of $50 or more ship free, and there is no minimum.

Tips for your first season

  1. Practice your doubles. In 01 games that require a double finish, checking out is where many new players struggle.
  2. Learn the scoreboard. Volunteer to keep score; it is the fastest way to learn the math and the rules.
  3. Watch the top players. Notice their routine, stance and pace, and borrow what works.
  4. Keep a steady rhythm. Rushing after a bad dart rarely helps. Breathe, reset and throw.
  5. Enjoy the social side. Some of your best friendships may start at the oche.

Most players see their averages climb steadily during their first season simply because they are throwing every week against good competition.

League etiquette in a nutshell

  • Stay out of the thrower's line of sight and keep quiet while they throw.
  • Be on time and tell your captain early if you cannot make it.
  • Shake hands before and after games.
  • Win graciously, lose graciously, and buy the other team a round of sodas once in a while.

Is a dart league worth it?

For most players, absolutely. A league gives you a reason to practice, a team to belong to and a weekly night out with friends who love the same game.
