Are Hooded Fishing Shirts Worth It? Hood vs No Hood

Are hooded fishing shirts worth it? For most anglers who spend long, bright days on open water, yes: a hooded fishing shirt covers the back of your neck, your ears and the sides of your face — the spots a cap misses and sunscreen sweats off first. If you mostly fish shady banks, early mornings or short trips, a regular long sleeve sun shirt is usually enough.

Below we break down why fishing shirts have hoods, when the hood earns its place, when it just gets in the way, and how to choose between a hooded and a regular long sleeve fishing shirt. Want to see the latest designs first? Browse our new fishing shirts.

Why do fishing shirts have hoods?

Fishing puts you in two kinds of sun at once: the light coming down from the sky and the glare bouncing up off the water. A cap shades your forehead and eyes, but it leaves the neck, ears and jawline exposed for hours. A lightweight hood fills that gap without you having to reapply sunscreen every time you wipe sweat or spray off your face.

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends sun-protective clothing as a first line of defense, because clothing does not wear off the way sunscreen does — see their guide to sun-protective clothing. A hood simply extends that coverage to the head and neck.

The second reason is comfort. On a calm, bright afternoon, a thin hood keeps direct sun off your scalp and neck, which many anglers find more comfortable than a hot neck gaiter. On cool, breezy mornings it also cuts a little wind.

Hooded vs regular fishing shirt: which should you choose?

Situation Hooded long sleeve Regular long sleeve
All-day boat or kayak trips in full sun Best pick — covers neck, ears and head Fine with a wide-brim hat and gaiter
Shore or bank fishing with shade Often more than you need Best pick — simpler, cooler on the neck
Tournament days and team photos Hood can cover a name printed high on the back Best pick if you want the back print fully visible
Wearing a cap or headphones Hood goes over the cap; some anglers love it, some don't No change to your usual setup
Cool, windy mornings Good — a light extra layer for head and neck Add a layer or gaiter

Rule of thumb: if you regularly come home with a sunburned neck or ears, go hooded. If you never wear a hood when you own one, a regular long sleeve shirt is the smarter buy.

Are hooded fishing shirts worth it? When the hood pays off

  • Offshore, flats and lake days with no shade. Hours of sun from above and glare from the water are exactly what the hood is built for.
  • Midday tournaments. When you can't pick your hours, coverage you don't have to reapply makes a real difference by the afternoon weigh-in.
  • Anglers who hate sunscreen on the face and neck. The hood cuts down the area you need to cover.
  • Kayak anglers. You sit low and close to the water, so reflected light hits you from every angle.

When a regular long sleeve fishing shirt makes more sense

  • Short trips and evening bites. If the sun is low, the hood adds little.
  • Team jerseys with names on the upper back. A hood worn down can sit over part of the back print. Many teams choose regular long sleeve shirts for photos and keep hooded shirts for practice days.
  • You already run a wide-brim hat plus a neck gaiter. That combo covers most of what a hood does.

What to look for in a hooded fishing shirt

  1. Light, quick-dry fabric. The hood should feel like part of the shirt, not like a sweatshirt. Our long sleeve fishing shirts are 100% polyester, lightweight, breathable, quick-dry and moisture-wicking.
  2. Sun protection in the fabric. Look for shirts sold with UPF sun protection; on ours, the hooded versions add neck and head coverage on top of the long sleeves.
  3. A print that lasts. Sublimation printing dyes the design into the fabric, so it won't crack or peel the way heavy screen prints can after many washes.
  4. Room for your cap. Try the hood over the hat you actually fish in.
  5. The right size. Sun shirts are worn loose for airflow. If you are between two sizes, size up.

Do hooded fishing shirts keep you cool?

A thin, light-colored, loose hood can feel cooler than bare skin in direct sun, because it blocks sunlight from heating your neck and head. A tight hood or a heavy fabric does the opposite, so fit and weight matter more than the hood itself. In very hot, still air, many anglers wear the hood up only during the brightest hours and drop it when the sun gets lower.

How to care for a hooded fishing shirt

Rinse off salt water and fish slime after each trip, then machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, do not bleach, and hang dry — the same care listed on every product page. Skipping the dryer keeps the fabric and the print looking new longer.

FAQ

Why do fishing shirts have hoods?

To cover the neck, ears and sides of the face from direct sun and glare off the water — areas a cap leaves exposed and sunscreen wears off quickly.

Are hooded fishing shirts hot?

Not when the fabric is light and the fit is loose. A thin hood that keeps sun off your head and neck can feel more comfortable than bare skin in bright sun.

Can you wear a hat with a hooded fishing shirt?

Yes. Most anglers wear a cap under the hood so the brim shades the eyes while the hood covers the neck and ears.

Are fishing shirts worth it?

If you fish in the sun for hours, yes: a lightweight long sleeve fishing shirt gives steady coverage, dries fast and saves you from reapplying sunscreen on your arms all day.
