Long Sleeve vs Short Sleeve Fishing Shirt: Which Is Better?

Long sleeve vs short sleeve fishing shirt: which is better? For long days on open water, a lightweight long sleeve fishing shirt is usually the better pick, because it covers your arms from sun and wind and a thin, quick-dry polyester shirt stays comfortable in the heat. A short sleeve fishing shirt makes sense for shaded spots, short trips, early mornings and wearing around the dock, as long as you use sunscreen on your arms.
Below we compare the two on sun coverage, heat, comfort and use, and answer the questions anglers ask most. You can see both styles in our custom fishing shirts collection: most designs come as Long Sleeve UPF, Hooded Long Sleeve UPF and T-Shirt UPF.

Long sleeve vs short sleeve fishing shirt at a glance
| Long Sleeve UPF | T-Shirt UPF (short sleeve) | |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric (ours) | 100% polyester, lightweight and breathable, quick-dry, moisture-wicking | 100% polyester, lightweight and breathable, quick-dry, moisture-wicking |
| Sun coverage | Torso and arms; hooded version adds neck and head | Torso and shoulders only |
| Feels in the heat | Light fabric, but more of it on your skin | Cooler on calm, shaded days |
| Sunscreen needed on arms | No (still needed on face, neck, hands) | Yes, and reapply |
| Best for | Offshore, flats, kayak, all-day tournaments | Piers, shaded banks, short trips, off the water |
Fabric details come from the style descriptions on our product pages. Both styles are listed with UPF sun protection; the long sleeve simply covers more skin.
Should you wear long sleeves when fishing?
If you will be in direct sun for hours, yes. Water and light-colored boat decks reflect sunlight, so you get exposure from above and below, and your forearms are in the sun every time you cast. Clothing is one of the simplest ways to protect skin: the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends sun-protective clothing as a first line of defense, together with sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. A long sleeve shirt also means less sunscreen to reapply with wet, fishy hands.

Do long sleeve fishing shirts keep you cooler?
A thin, light-colored long sleeve shirt can feel cooler than bare arms in strong sun, because it blocks direct sunlight on your skin and moisture-wicking fabric moves sweat to the surface to dry. It will not feel cool in still, humid air no matter what, and a dark or heavy shirt will feel hot. That is why fishing shirts are lightweight polyester rather than cotton: cotton soaks up sweat and spray and stays wet.
When a short sleeve fishing shirt is the better choice
- Shaded water. Creeks, tree-lined banks and covered docks.
- Short sessions. An hour at sunrise or sunset when the sun is low.
- Layering. A short sleeve tee under a light jacket on cool mornings.
- Off the water. Weigh-ins, the drive home, dinner after the tournament.
With a short sleeve shirt, put sunscreen on your arms and the back of your neck and reapply after swimming or sweating.

What about a hooded fishing shirt?
A hooded long sleeve shirt adds coverage for the neck, ears and back of the head, the spots a cap misses. If you are weighing that option, read our guide on whether hooded fishing shirts are worth it, and our explainer on how UV fishing shirts work.

How to care for a fishing shirt
Rinse off salt and fish slime soon after the trip, then machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, do not bleach, and hang dry. That is the care instruction for every style of these shirts, and it keeps the fabric wicking and the print sharp.

Do long sleeve fishing shirts keep you cooler?
A lightweight, light-colored, moisture-wicking long sleeve shirt can feel cooler than bare skin in strong sun because it blocks direct sunlight and dries quickly.
Should you wear long sleeves when fishing?

Can kids wear long sleeve fishing shirts?
Yes. Many of our designs include a Kids Long Sleeve UPF style sized for young anglers.
